Tappahannock (October 21, 2002) - The graduation of multiple all-star athletes last spring has meant a rebuilding season for fall teams at St. Margaret's School. Now improved skills, increased teamwork and steady determination are finally paying off, with both cross-country and varsity volleyball posting wins in recent contests.

Volleyball: Edge-of-your-seat excitement came to Ball Memorial Gymnasium on Friday, October 18, as the volleyball Scotties battled their way through a five-game match to a victory over St. Anne's-Belfield. St. Margaret's started slow, losing the first two games to the perennially tough Charlottesville squad, 21-25, 22-25.

SMS rallied behind the consistent serving of Tappahannock senior Ann Kramer Osburn, junior Lee Osborne and senior Fola Ogundiran, coming from more than 10 points behind to win game three, 25-12, then to take games four and five (25-22, 15-12).

"The key was eliminating the service errors we made in the first two games," said Coach Richard Rumrill. "I'm proud of the way that our players bounced back under pressure."

The volleyball Scotties now stand at 1-4 in the League of Independent Schools and 1-9 overall. In addition to Osburn, local students on the team include senior Lindsay Neist of Howerton, freshmen Allison Ryan and Katy Saunders of Tappahannock, and senior statistician Lindsay Swinson of Tappahannock.

Cross-Country: St. Margaret's led the pack in an October 17 meet at Washington and Lee High School, running away with a 17-35 triumph over the Eagles. SMS swept the first four places on the 3.1-mile course, with eighth-grader Kate Matthews taking first place in 25:20. She was followed by seniors Kaoru Hoshino (26:20) and Catherine Farland (28:21), and eighth-grader Keri Straughan of Hague (30:15). Other top finishers for the Scotties included Kate Lowe (30:40), Emily Hodkins (32:35), Emily Chang (33:15) and Jee Sun Lee (38:09).

"It was a true day for cross-country," said Coach David Cook, referring to the storm clouds that opened up as soon as the race began, adding rain and mud to the already challenging course. "Washington and Lee were great hosts, and we look forward to running with them again."

In addition to Straughan, other local girls running cross-country this year include Megan Burton of Montross and Allison Smith of Warsaw.
