Tappahannock (November 11, 2002) - Four girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret's School. They were among the school's student-athletes who received awards at last week's fall sports banquet.

"This fall, more than two-thirds of our students played on a sports team," said Athletic Director Sue Saunders. "They're building a foundation of teamwork skills, healthy exercise habits and self-confidence that can sustain them long beyond their high school careers."

Two student-athletes won spots on the League of Independent Schools' all-league field hockey team. Juniors Erin Kelley of Lancaster and Sarah Belen of Oak Hill were selected for the honor by coaches at other LIS schools. All-LIS honors in cross-country will be determined after the league meet on November 8.

In addition, each of the SMS teams and coaches conferred awards. Kelley was voted most valuable hockey player, Belen was voted most improved hockey player, and senior Claire Hopkins of Oak Grove won both the coaches' award and a senior award for three years of varsity play. Members of the varsity volleyball team chose senior Lindsay Neist of Howertons as most valuable player. Neist also earned a senior award for four years of varsity play. Sophomore Palmer Ware of Dunnsville won the junior varsity field hockey coaches' award for her impressive play as goalie; only one point was scored against her all season.
