Tappahannock (March 24, 2003) - Local residents can help their neighbors in need--and indirectly, maybe even our nation's military service people--at a blood drive on Saturday, March 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Ball Memorial Gymnasium at St. Margaret's School. The event is sponsored by the school's student community service organization, Basic Needs.

"A safe and reliable blood supply is one of the Red Cross's most important domestic missions," said Basic Needs Co-Chair Lindsay Neist of Howertons. "We hope our support here at home will make it easier for the Red Cross to fulfill its crucial roles in the war with Iraq." American Red Cross personnel have deployed alongside military units to provide emergency communications between service members and their families, as well as to coordinate humanitarian relief for civilian war victims.

This marks the fourth year that St. Margaret's has worked with the Red Cross to sponsor a blood drive. The goal is 30 pints, and students are hopeful that together, members of the school and community can exceed it. All of the blood collected will be used by health care facilities in the local area.

According to the Red Cross, most people aged 17 and over qualify to give blood if they weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated within the last 56 days. There is no upper age limit. Donations are collected by health care professionals, using sterile supplies, to ensure the safety of both the donor and the blood supply.
