Twenty-two girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret's School. They were among the school's student-athletes who received awards at the spring sports banquet on May 21.

Four St. Margaret's School students were named to spring all-league teams by League of Independent Schools coaches
Four student-athletes won spots on League of Independent Schools' all-league teams. Sarah Belen of Oak Hill and Allison Davis of Chestertown, MD, were named to the all-league Division II lacrosse team, and Becky Clark of Lively and Blair Fisher of Lottsburg were named to the all-league softball team. The girls were selected for the honor by coaches at other LIS schools.
In addition, each of the SMS teams and coaches conferred varsity letters and special awards:
Crew - Captained by Palmer Ware of Dunnsville and boarding student Lucy Brandon, the crew team posted a winning record in its fifth year of interscholastic competition. The undefeated junior varsity four won championships in the Tidewater Independent Scholastic Rowing Association and the Eastern Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association.
Coach Skye Elliot awarded letters to Lucy Brandon, Laura Caton, Melissa Farara, Catherine Farland, Victoria Grant of Montross, Neillee Katona of Dunnsville, Chelsea McDowell, Brooke Shafer, Manager Cariad Shepherd, Meredith Walsh, Palmer Ware, Patti Webb and Jessica White. In addition, Coach Elliot presented Katona with a special award for technical excellence, Webb with the Kelly Proctor "Moment of Excellence" award and Caton with a senior award for five years of crew. Team members voted Brandon and Ware the most valuable rowers, and Walsh the most improved rower.
Lacrosse - This year's Scotty lacrosse team, captained by Lindsay Neist of Howertons and boarding student Sarah Belen, ended the season with a 4-1-1 record. Coach Cupper Dickinson presented varsity letters to Annie Arnest of Kinsale, Vera Attaway, Jessica Bailey, Sarah Belen, Jackie Brunk, Emily Chang, Sarah Copeland of Tappahannock, Cassy Cormack, Missy Cormack, Erin Dall-Silver, Alle Davis, Rebecca Dickinson of Loretto, Kaoru Hoshino, Rita Huang, Catherine Johnston, Ray Kurtis, Manager Maggie Lu, Kate Matthews, Margaret Moncure of Tappahannock, Lindsay Neist, Anne Parrish, Ciara Robinson, Regina Saravia, Margot Seglem, Eileen Tsai, Patricia Van Pelt and Maddie Zirkle.
Coach Dickinson presented a coach's award to Davis for her positive attitude and coachability. She gave senior awards to Chang (3 years), Cassy Cormack (3 years), Kurtis (3 years) and Neist (4 years). Lacrosse team members selected Belen as most valuable player and Arnest as most improved player.
Junior Varsity Softball - Coached by Dale Harter and led by captains Jessica Crockett of Irvington and Robin Ridderhof, the SMS JV softball team ended the season with improved softball skills and a 2-1 record.
Coach Harter awarded JV letters to Jessica Crockett, Emily Hodkins, Marfy Houstoun, Min Jung Kim, Sojin Lee, Ali McKeon of Urbanna, Emily Nein, Kate Reese, Sarah Reilly of Walkerton, Robin Ridderhof, Hope Scott of West Point, Keri Straughan of Hague, Kate Turnage of Hague and Lisa Waybright. He presented coach's awards to Reilly and Crockett for their sportsmanship and determination. Team members chose Ridderhof as most valuable player and Waybright as most improved player.
Varsity Softball - St. Margaret's varsity softball team finished the season in style, defeating two of the league's toughest teams to reach the tournament finals. The Scotties lost a heartbreaker to Richmond's Collegiate School, 2-1, to finish second in the championships, two places ahead of their regular season ranking. Captains were Blair Fisher and Ann Kramer Osburn of Tappahannock.
Coach Sue Saunders awarded varsity softball letters to Brittany Alexander, Catherine Chilton of Lancaster, Becky Clark, Amy Connors, Shannan Dickie, Blair Fisher, Claire Hopkins of Oak Grove, Scorekeeper Martha Ann Houstoun, Lee Osborne, Ann Kramer Osburn, Katy Saunders of Tappahannock and Michelle Sylva of Tappahannock. She gave the highest batting average award to Fisher and a coach's award to pitcher Becky Clark for an outstanding season that included a no-hitter. Saunders also presented senior awards to Hopkins (3 years), Osburn (4 years) and Sylva (4 years). Softball players voted Fisher most valuable player and Alexander most improved player.
Tennis - Captained by Maggie Kite and Jennifer Stuart, the Scotty tennis team contended with rained-out practices and matches this season to finish third in the league tournament. Coach Bill King awarded varsity letters to Marin Brown, Kaoru Higaki, Maggie Kite, Ja Young Kwon, Jeesun Lee, Roz Morrison, Catherine Norris, Maggie Ransone of Kilmarnock, Allison Ryan of Tappahannock, Jennifer Stuart and Manager Lindsay Swinson. He presented a coach's award to Morrison and a senior award to Kite (3 years). Team members chose Kite as most valuable player and Lee as most improved player.
