Contact: Jenni Brockman Phone: 804-443-3357 Fax: 804-443-6781 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tappahannock (June 9, 2003) - - Recent St. Margaret's School graduates often say they wouldn't have learned how to learn if it hadn't been for Director of Studies ViAnn Farmer. "You didn't let me get away with anything, Mrs. Farmer, but you were right," goes a typical tribute. "You taught me how to take responsibility for myself and that's why I've been successful in college."
Now Farmer has received more public--and less equivocal-- praise. St. Margaret's faculty and administrators recently recognized her contributions to the school by selecting her to receive the Robert Carter and Toole Rotter Wellford Faculty Award. The prize, established by the late Toole Rotter Wellford in memory of her husband, is awarded every two years to a gifted teacher who is knowledgeable in his or her content areas, promotes positive relationships with students, innovates in the classroom, demonstrates professionalism and models "service above self." A native of Portsmouth, Farmer earned her B.S. from Longwood College and her M.Ed. from the College of William and Mary. She began working at SMS as a part-time tutor in 1984, joining the faculty full-time in 1987 to establish the school's learning resource center. Her responsibilities include scheduling the school's 158 students, coordinating the math and writing labs, administering the advisor program and teaching study skills. Farmer lives in Miller's Tavern with her husband, Joe. Son Joe is a rising senior at Woodberry Forest School and daughter Katie, a 2000 graduate of St. Margaret's, is a rising senior in the James Madison University School of Nursing. |
