Contact: Jenni Brockman Phone: 804-443-3357 Fax: 804-443-6781 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tappahannock (August 29, 2003) - Outstanding faculty retention means that when St. Margaret's School students started their classes on Monday, they were learning from adults they already knew and trusted. Almost 95% of the 2002-2003 faculty are back in the classroom, and nearly 40% have been teaching at SMS for 10 or more years.
"We work hard to retain teachers, because students benefit greatly from a stable educational environment," said Head of School Margaret R. Broad. "The community benefits, too, when these teachers make Tappahannock their home and become active members of churches and service organizations." Only a few teachers and staff are new to the school this year. Alexis Beattie, a 2003 graduate of Bryn Mawr College with a B.A. in mathematics, is teaching math and serving as a dorm parent. Leslie McBride, an SMS alumna and the daughter of Pete and Gorland McBride of Tappahannock, is teaching Spanish and working as a dorm parent. McBride is a 2000 graduate of the College of Charleston with a B.A. in Spanish. In addition, 2003 Middlebury College graduate Harmony Button will serve as a teaching intern and assistant crew coach. Director of Annual Giving Jennifer Robertson comes to SMS from the Buckley School in New York City, where she was assistant to the headmaster. Ms. Robertson is a 1996 graduate of the College of Charleston. Assistant Director of Admission Kelli Austin is a 2003 graduate of Washington and Lee University, where she chaired the student admission society. In addition, JoAnne Lee of Montross joined the Development Office in July as database and office manager. Cookie Evans, who recently returned to Tappahannock from Florida, is the new morning receptionist. |
