Tappahannock (September 22, 2003) - Five students at St. Margaret's School, including four from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, have been inducted into the National Honor Society. Senior Jessica Stokes of Tappahannock and juniors Annie Arnest of Kinsale; Rachel Chang of Dae-Jeoun, Korea; Neillee Katona of Dunnsville and Palmer Ware of Dunnsville recently were tapped for membership at a special chapel service.

"These young women exemplify St. Margaret's mission of 'educating young women for life,'" said faculty sponsor and Foreign Language Chair Marshall Lloyd. "They are more than outstanding scholars; they already have exemplified exemplary leadership, character and service-the skills they will need to be tomorrow's leaders."

The five join senior Cariad Shepherd, who was selected last year. Academic standards for membership in St. Margaret's NHS chapter exceed the national organization's guidelines, Lloyd said. In order to be tapped, students must be juniors or seniors who have attended the school for at least two years and maintained an average of 90 or better over that period.

The St. Margaret's NHS chapter takes a leadership role in many campus and community service efforts, including assisting athletes at the winter Special Olympics and sponsoring the school's annual academic awards banquet.

The National Honor Society was established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1921-the same year that St. Margaret's School was established-to "create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character" among high school students. Members are eligible to attend national conferences and regional leadership camps, and may qualify for one of 250 NHS scholarships offered nationally.
