Tappahannock (November 10, 2003)
– Nine girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret’s School. They were among the student-athletes who received awards at the school’s fall sports banquet.
Hockey - Junior Neillee Katona of Dunnsville won a berth on the League of Independent Schools' all-league field hockey team. She was selected for the honor by coaches at other LIS schools. All-LIS cross-country honors will be determined after the championship meet on November 7.
In addition, each of the SMS teams and coaches conferred awards. Junior Palmer Ware of Dunnsville was voted most valuable varsity hockey player, sophomore Allison Davis of Chestertown, MD, was voted most improved varsity hockey player, and junior Becky Clark of Lively won the coaches' award. In addition, Sarah Copeland of Tappahannock, Patricia Van Pelt of Charlotte, Erin Kelley of Lancaster and Sarah Weakley of Montross were presented with senior awards for their multiple years of varsity play.The junior varsity field hockey team selected sophomore Jessica Crockett of Irvington as most valuable player, and junior Nozomi Yamaguchi of Japan as most improved player.
Volleyball - Members of the varsity volleyball team chose senior Lee Osborne of Charleston, WV, as most valuable player. Senior Amy Connors of Alexandria was voted most improved player. The coach’s award went to sophomore Katy Saunders of Tappahannock. The junior varsity volleyball team voted sophomore Melissa Farara of the British Virgin Islands the most valuable player and freshman Chelsea Jacobs of Dunnsville as most improved player. Junior Steph Rosen of Woodbridge won the coach’s award. Cross-Country - Junior Andrea Martinez of Mexico was chosen as most valuable runner by her cross-country teammates. Junior Rachel Chang of Korea won most improved runner honors, and Senior Kate Lowe of Darnestown, MD, won the coach’s award. Lowe and Robin Ridderhof of Fredericksburg received senior awards for three years of team membership. St. Margaret’s will field winter sports teams in basketball, soccer and swimming. The Scotty varsity and junior varsity basketball squads begin play on Thursday, December 4, at home against Richmond Christian. Varsity soccer kicks off the same day at the Covenant School in Charlottesville. JV soccer gets a jump on the season with scrimmages against Aylett Country Day on November 11 and 13. Scotty swimmers splash into their third season with a meet at St. Catherine’s in Richmond on Friday, December 5. |
