Varsity Soccer: Varsity soccer took on Richmond’s Steward School at the Essex Intermediate School field on Thursday, January 8. Braving fierce cold, the Scotties kept pressure on the Steward goal, but the talented keeper kept SMS scoreless. Late in the first half, Steward broke away with a rare run to score, leading St. Margaret's at halftime 1-0. The Scotties regrouped and kept up the intensity, with Rebecca Dickinson, a sophomore from Loretto, beating Steward defenders as she headed toward goal. Her persistence paid off, and Catherine Chilton, a junior from Lancaster, took the pass and scored to tie up the game. St. Margaret's continued to play well against an increasingly physical Steward team, finally earning a penalty kick with only a few minutes left to play. Chilton proved to be an accurate shot against the formidable Steward goalie and sealed the St. Margaret's victory, 2-1. Coach Louise Cook remarked that the team "played great defense and was more aggressive." The Scotties will be looking for another win when they play Trinity at home next Tuesday, January 13. Junior Varsity Soccer: JV soccer traveled to Richmond to play a skilled Trinity Episcopal team on January 8. Despite the 6-1 loss, coach Lawrence Altaffer felt that "the team played the best they've ever played." Indeed, the largely inexperienced St. Margaret's squad learns something new in every game. The Scotties emphasized effective passing and aggressive play, a focus the girls displayed when sophomore Brooke Shafer scored a goal, her first of the season. JV plays Trinity again next Tuesday, January 13, at home. Varsity Basketball: St. Margaret's varsity basketball team played a tight game on Thursday, January 8, at Richmond Christian Academy. With a 7-point lead entering the third quarter, SMS was poised for a win. But with junior Becky Clark of Lively in foul trouble, the team lost some of its energy. Nonetheless, SMS held on, thanks to Ligon Brooks’ tenacity in the final minutes. Brooks, a freshman from Millers Tavern, was the SMS high scorer with 15 points. The Scotties played well to the end of this nail biter, but came up just short of victory, 36-37. Varsity and JV basketball will travel to Covenant in Charlottesville for a January 14 match-up. |
