Varsity Soccer: Coming off a win against Steward, varsity soccer faced off against Richmond’s Trinity Episcopal School at home on January 13. Starting with a different lineup, a deep SMS team challenged Trinity from the kickoff. Amidst some confusion at the goal, a Trinity player scored first for the Scotties. Minutes later, senior Sarah Weakley of Montross scored on a long cross. St. Margaret's continued to play well, making clean passes and shutting down a stellar Trinity front line. Junior Anne Parrish brought the score to 3-0 toward the end of the first half. In the second half, Trinity picked up its level of play and answered St. Margaret's first half run by scoring a quick goal. The Lady Titans continued to press the St. Margaret's defense but did not find the goal again. Weakley scored a second time for SMS on a well-placed pass from the midfield. The final goal clinched the win, SMS 4, Trinity 1. The Scotties travel to Steward on Monday, January 21 and play St. Anne’s-Belfield at home on January 23. JV Basketball: St. Margaret’s JV basketball team split into two smaller squads to play in a tournament at Chesapeake Academy on Saturday, January 17. After 10 hours in the gym, the two teams tasted success, with one placing second and the other fourth. Sophomore Melissa Farara and eighth-grader Becky Ulett-Hylton earned All-Tournament Team honors. The JV played at Covenant School in Charlottesville on Wednesday, January 14, and showed how much they have improved over the course of this season. Down at the half, Coach David Cook challenged the girls to make a defensive switch, and they held even with Covenant until the final buzzer. Unfortunately, the Scotties could not recover from the first half deficit. Covenant won, 32-14. |
