Tappahannock (January 26, 2004) - Once again, St. Margaret’s was one of only two schools in Virginia selected to volunteer at the Special Olympics Alpine Skiing Competition this January. SMS students have been assisting special athletes at the event for more than eight years.

“Service above self is one of St. Margaret’s highest values,” said Director of Studies ViAnn Farmer, one of the trip organizers. “It’s how we prepare our students to be contributing members of the community.”

Athletes with mental disabilities came to the competition at Wintergreen from all over the country. Members of the SMS Chapter of the National Honor Society contributed 10 to 15 hours of service by accompanying participants to their events, cheering them on, and promoting a healthy atmosphere between competitors, event organizers and supporters.

A total of five SMS students and a chaperone volunteered this year: Annie Arnest of Kinsale, Neillee Katona of Dunnsville, boarding student Cariad Shepherd, Jessica Stokes of Tappahannock, Palmer Ware of Dunnsville, and Day Family and Activities Coordinator Cupper Dickinson.
