Varsity Soccer: The Scotties faced a tough St. Anne's-Belfield team on Friday, January 23 at home. As the underdog, SMS went into the game with a positive but wary attitude. Coach Louise Cook pumped the girls up with a great pep talk, and St. Margaret's took the field. Then Sarah Weakley, a senior from Montross, made the most amazing shot of her career: a perfect high arch from 20 yards out that eluded the STAB goalie, putting St. Margaret's ahead 1-0 in the first 10 minutes. The Scotties continued their strong defense and shut out STAB for the rest of the half.

In the second half, St. Anne's stepped up its level of play and challenged the SMS defense. In response, Weakley and Catherine Chilton, a junior from Lancaster, made powerful runs to the STAB goal with shots that just barely missed the mark. SMS goalie Meredith Walsh made many key saves to keep St. Anne’s scoreless. St. Margaret's took the game 1-0 to snap a four-year string of consecutive STAB victories. The Scotties will travel to Charlottesville on Wednesday, February 4, for a rematch.

Swimming: The St. Margaret's swim team placed third overall in its first meet on January 10. Also participating in the Richmond event were St. Gertrude's School, Trinity Episcopal School and Goochland High School. Eighth-grader Marissa Lambert placed second in the 100-meter butterfly and was St. Margaret's highest finisher. Both the SMS medley relay and 200-meter freestyle relay teams placed fourth in a large field of multiple contenders from each school. Coach Kay Carlton was impressed with the girls’ performance and noted that "every single swimmer improved her times." Scotty swimmers will travel to St. Catherine's School in Richmond on February 7 for the league championships.
