FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tappahannock (April 4, 2004) - St. Margaret's crew and softball teams performed well in their first outings of the season.

Crew:

St. Margaret's crew team traveled to Norfolk on Saturday, March 27 for its first regatta. Against especially strong crews from Norfolk Academy and Great Bridge High School, the Scotties held their own. In the first race of the day, the Novice Eight won decisively on the 1400m course. The Varsity Four placed third and two Novice Fours placed fifth and seventh. Overall, Coach Erika Slozak was pleased with the day’s results, as many of the SMS rowers were new to the sport. Slozak commented, "The girls did a great job, and now we know what to work on." The team participated in a regatta in Mathews on Saturday, April 3; details in the next report.

Varsity Softball:

The SMS varsity softball team faced Lancaster on Thursday, March 25 to kick off the season. The Scotties had an amazing start, with sophomore Allison Ryan of Tappahannock leading the team in hitting (3 for 4 at bat). Junior Becky Clark of Lively had a solid game as pitcher, and the Scotties won 10-4.

SMS faced St. Catherine's School on Tuesday, March 30. The game proved to be a great showdown between two evenly matched teams and remained scoreless through the fifth inning. St. Catherine's racked up two runs in the top of sixth, and St. Margaret's answered with a pair of runs in the same inning. The Scotties held the Saints scoreless in the seventh, and at the bottom of the seventh with two outs, another inning looked likely. Then Catherine Chilton, a junior from Lancaster, hit a single to get on base. With the guts to capitalize on a St. Catherine's bobble, Chilton stole second. On the next pitch, Chilton took advantage of an error to steal third and home to win the game!

Coach Sue Saunders thought the game was exciting and believes her team is ready for its upcoming contest against Richmond’s Collegiate School, which triumphed over the Scotties in last year’s league tournament.

JV Softball:

St. Margaret’s junior varsity softball team also faced Lancaster on March 25, showing promise for a successful season. Despite the 4-3 loss, freshman pitcher Keri Straughan of Hague struck out 11 Lancaster hitters. Coach Dale Harter noted that the team "performed well against a larger school."

The JV Scotties had a chance to prove their mettle on March 30 when they took on St. Catherine's at home. As St. Catherine's cycled through four different pitchers and walked many hitters, St. Margaret's Straughan overpowered the opposing team for nearly all of the game. With a score of 13-0 going into the fifth, Straughan gave up just three runs before the game was called. Coming off of the 13-3 win, SMS looks forward to playing Collegiate.
