Teachers Bring Experience, Innovation to SMS Classrooms

Tappahannock (September 13, 2004) - A faculty with more than 250 years of collective experience has been augmented this year by seven new teachers and two new staff members, bringing a balance of stability and innovation to the classroom at St. Margaret’s School.

The Rev. Dr. Candine Johnson, a 2004 graduate of The General Theological Seminary, has been named chaplain. She also teaches religion and serves on the school’s administrative cabinet. Prior to her call to ordained ministry, Johnson was academic advisor to the University of Richmond’s student-athletes for 16 years. She holds a B.S. in psychology and education from Brooklyn College, an M.Ed. and Ph.D. in education from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Divinity from GTS.

Elizabeth Armor and Juliana Bush have joined the English Department. Armor, a graduate of the College of William & Mary with a B.A. in English, formerly taught at Randolph-Macon and Massanutten Military academies. A licensed captain, she also has instructed “Sea Week” courses for teenagers aboard the 46-foot sailboat that she and her husband own. Bush holds a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia and is working toward an M.A. in English from Middlebury College’s Breadloaf program. She previously worked as an account executive for the United Way and a capital management firm in San Francisco. In addition to teaching English, she coaches JV volleyball and assists in the marketing office.

Tracy Harter is teaching history and coaching cross-country. She holds a B.A. in history with honors from Boise State University and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina. Before coming to SMS, she worked as an archivist, researcher and curator for a variety of institutions, including the Library of Virginia.

Jennifer Howard, Maren LaLiberty and Faith Martin have joined the Math Department. Howard, who also serves as dorm parent, is a recent graduate of Georgia’s Wesleyan College, where she was a three-year resident advisor. She holds a B.A. in mathematics. LaLiberty, previously the head coach for women’s rowing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will coach the SMS crew team and teach algebra. A former practicing physician, she earned a B.A. in microbiology and an M.D. from the University of Minnesota. Martin is a recent graduate of Virginia Tech with a B.S. in mathematics education and experience in tutoring. She also will coach the tennis team.

Jessica Recchiuti and Karen Wilkins are working in the school’s external offices. Recchiuti, a recent graduate of Ohio’s Marietta College, is an assistant director of admission. Wilkins, a Reedville resident and graduate of Rappahannock Community College, is director of annual giving. She previously was a fundraiser for Rappahannock General Hospital.
