Tappahannock (September 16, 2004) - The fall athletic season is underway at St. Margaret's School, and the Scotties are showing great promise. Goals were scored by junior Rebecca Dickinson from Loretto, senior Anne Parrish from Gordonsville and junior Sarah Reilly from Bruington. The impressive play was witnessed by both fans and Coach Cupper Dickinson, who stated that "the team came together beautifully from the beginning for a wonderful season opener." The Scotties added another win to their record with a 3-2 victory against Northumberland High School on Tuesday, September 14. They will face the Covenant School in Charlottesville on September 15.

The varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams opened their season against Christchurch's Fighting Seahorses on Tuesday, September 14. Junior varsity co-captains, freshman Becky Ulett-Hylton of Willingboro, NJ, and sophomore Chelsea Jacobs from Dunnsville, led the team to a strong showing. Although the team quickly overcame first game jitters and improved their passing and net play, the Scotties were defeated in two games (25-16, 25-16). The JV team will play its first home game against St. Catherine's School on Tuesday, September 21. The varsity volleyball team battled its way to a 26-24 tiebreaker in its final game against the Seahorses after coming back from a seven-point deficit. The tense final moments had fans on their feet, leading Coach Gayle Hicks to remark on the potential she saw in her varsity team.

"I was very happy with what I saw on the court today. The players took what they learned in practice and executed it in a game situation. The girls made some great plays." Final score: Seahorses 3, Scotties 0. The varsity team will be competing in its first home game against Trinity Episcopal of Richmond on Thursday, September 15.
