Contact: Jenni Brockman Phone: 804-443-3357 Fax: 804-443-6781 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE By Juliana Bush Tappahannock (September 24, 2004) - St. Margaret’s athletic teams posted two more victories after the field hockey and volleyball teams faced St. Catherine’s on Tuesday, September 21.
Field Hockey: The Scotties defeated the Saints, 3-1, with goals scored by junior Catherine Chilton of Lancaster, senior Becky Clark of Lancaster, and junior Sarah Reilly of Bruington. The team will attempt to bring its record to 4-1 when it takes the field against Fredericksburg Academy on Monday, September 27. SMS varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams also contended with the Saints in hard-fought home games on the 21st. The JV claimed its first win of the season by only 2 points in a tie-breaking third game (25-18, 20-25, 15-13). Consistent serving by junior Chelle Chiles of Reedville and the rest of the team secured the victory. The varsity was defeated in three games, a loss that does not fully reflect the caliber of the team’s offensive and defensive efforts. Both teams play Richmond’s Steward School at home on Thursday, September 23. Cross-Country: New coach Tracy Harter, an experienced runner, describes her team as “very motivated and wanting to excel.” In its first meet at Essex High School on September 21, the team tied with Lancaster for a third-place finish. Eight SMS runners competed, with 3 placing in the top 15. Junior Allyson Childress of King George finished first for the Scotties and eighth overall with a time of 26:18. Sophomore Keri Straughan of Hague and junior Taylor McEwan of Maryland were the second- and third-place finishers for St. Margaret’s in 26:47 and 29:17, respectively. The Scotty runners’ next meet is at Steward on Tuesday, September 28. |
