Volleyball: The varsity volleyball team faced St. Gertrude’s on Thursday, September 30, coming from behind to win in four games. Strong defensive blockers on the Gators’ side threatened offensive hits by junior Allison Ryan of Tappahannock and senior Ali Place of Pinehurst, NC, but the two SMS players quickly learned to move around the blockers and find the open spots. After losing the first game, the Scotties bounced back and won the next three. The win boosts their league record to 3-2, coming off a 3-0 loss to St. Anne’s-Belfield on September 28. “This team is a completely different team from last year,” said returning starter Katy Saunders, a junior from Tappahannock, “and we continue to improve with each game.” Both the junior varsity and varsity teams face Richmond Christian away on October 1. Field Hockey: It was what Coach Cupper Dickinson termed a “frustrating week” for the SMS field hockey team. The Scotties’ record slipped to 3-3 after losses to Fredericksburg Academy on Monday, September 27, and Steward on Thursday, September 30. Junior Jennie Lynne Leonard of Richmond lobbed a ball into the net for St. Margaret’s only goal against a tough Steward defense. The 3-1 tally reflected Coach Dickinson’s conclusion that the Scotties were “fielding and controlling the ball well, but they couldn’t finish it off.” SMS next plays Covenant School of Charlottesville at home on Tuesday, October 5. Cross-Country: Inclement weather kept the St. Margaret’s cross-country team from competing against Steward on September 28, but they will face many teams on Saturday, October 2 at the William & Mary Invitational. |
