FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tappahannock (October 4, 2004) - Area runners and walkers can save time and money by registering now for the sixth annual, 3-mile Rappahannock River Run/Walk on Saturday, October 16.

This year’s 3-mile event takes place on Saturday, October 16 at 8:00 a.m., following a flat, fast course that begins and ends at St. Margaret’s School and takes participants through the Tappahannock historic district.

That’s because advance registrants save $5, are assured of a race T-shirt and can spend their pre-race time stretching and relaxing, rather than standing in line. The event is a community outreach project of the St. Margaret’s School Alumnae Association, which has used previous years’ proceeds to support campus renovation and beautification efforts.

To register, visit the River Run/Walk online at www.sms.org/as54rrcf.htm or the bottom of this page to print out a participant form. Complete the form, make out a $15 check to St. Margaret’s School, and send both to: St. Margaret’s School, Attention: Liz Musselman, P.O. Box 158, Tappahannock, VA 22560.

Registration also will be held on race day from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. in front of St. Margaret’s Hall on Water Lane, at a cost of $20. The race begins at 8 a.m. sharp.

In 2003, Douglas Marshall of Mathews won the men’s division and the race in 15:41 and Julia Smith of Tappahannock won the women’s division and came in fourth overall in 18:17. Prizes are awarded each year in a variety of age categories, in addition to special recognition for the top male, female, and Essex County resident.

More than 30 area merchants and organizations are helping to sponsor the run/walk, said SMS Alumnae Director Liz Musselman. Sponsors include: Atkins Petroleum and Propane, Bank of Essex, Bank of Lancaster, Carpenter Studios, Chesapeake Academy, Coffman’s on the Coast, Collision Repair, Crowther Heating and Air Conditioning, Design Printing, Digital Wisdom, Esquire Services, Inc., The Hope and Glory Inn, and Lowery's Restaurant.
