Tappahannock (October 18, 2004) - The field hockey and volleyball seasons have been underway for over a month, but it's the cross country season that is just heating up! Previous cancellations due to inclement weather kept the team away from competition in September. Now, the running Scotties are proving themselves on area courses.

The cross-country competition was tough at the William and Mary Invitational Arrow  Photo left:   The cross-country competition was tough at the William and Mary Invitational. This SMS runner keeps pace with a pack from some of the state’s top running schools.

Cross-Country: In the William and Mary High School Invitational, a statewide meet held October 2, the Scotties braved the rain in a muddy, shortened course. The race was challenging, and Coach Tracy Harter was excited for her young team to gain some meet experience.

That experience worked to the team's advantage in its first full-length meet at The Collegiate School's Goochland fields on October 6. Freshman Ellie Schneidman of Alexandria and junior Allyson Childress of King George finished first and second for the team in 26:14 and 26:40, respectively. Freshman Young-Eun Lee of Korea placed fourth for the Scotties in her first meet ever. Harter said the runners' times showed marked improvement, even on a longer course. The team competed in Montross against Washington and Lee High School on October 9 and finished second. Harter anticipates continued improvement in the remaining three meets.

Field Hockey: The SMS field hockey team was defeated by Covenant 0-4 on October 5, but came back with two wins in the past week. The Scotties defeated Northumberland 1-0 on October 7 thanks to a goal scored by junior Sarah Reilley of Bruington.

"We ended the long dry spell, and played better together as a team," said Coach Cupper Dickinson.

The team won again (2-1) against Wakefield School in The Plains on October 12. In this matchup, Reilley contributed another goal as did senior Catherine Chilton of Lancaster. The team record stands at 5-4.

Volleyball: Varsity volleyball defeated Trinity in Richmond on October 12. It was a decisive victory secured by the Scotties in only three games. The team gained a significant lead in the second game due to strong serving by junior Allison Ryan of Tappahannock. The varsity volleyball L.I.S. record now stands at 4-2.

Next up for the Scotties: The cross country, field hockey, JV and varsity volleyball teams faced Steward away on October 13, and field hockey and volleyball met Lancaster High School at home for parents’ weekend matchups on October 16. Be looking for a complete report next week.
