Tappahannock (October 25, 2004) - It was another road trip for St. Margaret’s athletes as both volleyball teams faced the Collegiate Cougars and the field hockey team met the St. Catherine’s Saints on Tuesday, October 19. This time, however, two of the three Scotty teams overcame their hosts’ home court advantage.

Field Hockey: Junior Jennie Lynne Leonard of Richmond, junior Alexis Mamoudis of Virginia Beach, and senior Anne Parrish of Gordonsville contributed goals in the hockey contest, and the Scotties won, 3-1.

Volleyball: JV volleyball defeated the Cougars in three extremely close and hard fought games (24-26, 25-23, 15-12). Teamwork and communication on the court were the determining factors in the victory. SMS varsity volleyball lost in three (17-25, 12-25, 17-25) to the hard hitting Cougars, but Coach Gayle Hicks was happy with the Scotties’ play.

“Collegiate is a top ranked team, and even though we lost, we fought valiantly and put our whole effort into the game,” she said. Fall family weekend matchups at home against Lancaster High School on Saturday, October 16, put another mark in the Scotties’ win column. The field hockey team played a smooth and well-coordinated game, coming out with two goals in the first half en route to a definitive 3-0 conclusion. Varsity and junior varsity volleyball did not fare as well against the Lady Devils, a perennial Northern Neck District powerhouse. Final varsity scores were 25-7, 25-11, 25-10.

Earlier, on October 14, all four SMS teams competed against Steward in Richmond. Varsity volleyball toppled the Spartans in just three games (25-22, 25-18, 25-15), while the field hockey and junior varsity volleyball teams fell.

Cross-Country: Cross-country coach Tracy Harter was particularly impressed by the performance of her runners in their encounter with Steward. Harter said that “everyone improved their time, some quite considerably. They are all learning to run more efficiently!” Freshman Ellie Schneidman of Alexandria came in second with a personal best time of just over 23 minutes.

Next up for the Scotties: On October 21, varsity field hockey plays Christchurch away and JV and varsity volleyball travel to Charlottesville to face Covenant. Cross-country races Collegiate on October 26.
