International Photographer to Speak at SMS

Tappahannock (October 27, 2004) - Area residents are invited to join the St. Margaret’s School community when noted photographer Margaret Woodson Nea presents a slide program, “Gifts of the Spirit,” on Wednesday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m. in Ball Memorial Gymnasium.

Nea is known for her photographs of women and children in developing nations that include India, Nepal, Ecuador, Haiti, Kenya and Guatemala. Her recent work has been in affiliation with World Neighbors, a non-profit, humanitarian organization that promotes literacy, community-operated food and sanitation programs, and sustainable economic development in 18 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The International Photography Hall of Fame and the United Nations headquarters have exhibited Nea’s pictures. They also have appeared in publications of the Christian Children’s Fund and Bread for the World, as well as in her book, “Children: Gifts of the Spirit.” Nea has served as artist-in-residence at both St. Catherine’s School in Richmond and the Episcopal High School in Alexandria.

Wednesday’s program is one in a series of free, public presentations that the school is sponsoring this year. Other scheduled speakers are: the Richmond Ballet’s youth troupe, “Minds in Motion,” on November 4; Radford University forensic scientist Dr. Isaac Van Patten on January 13; the University of Virginia’s gospel choir, “Black Voices of Virginia,” on January 21; SMS faculty member Milly Rixey speaking about global environmental issues and her summer trip to Zambia on February 2; and re-enactor and SMS parent Kathy Strauss presenting Civil War women on April 14.
