The field hockey game at Christchurch on Thursday, October 21, was marked by determined play by the Seahorses. But the Scotties could not be deterred. SMS won, 6-2, with goals scored by junior Sarah Reilly of Bruington, junior Alexis Mamoudis of Virginia Beach, and seniors Catherine Chilton of Lancaster and Becky Clark of Lively. Junior Rebecca Dickinson of Loretto also contributed two goals. “The girls played a beautiful game, and came out on top,” said Coach Cupper Dickinson. The rematch came a week later as Christchurch traveled to Tappahannock for a game at Gilchrist Field on Thursday, October 28. This time, the Seahorse defense was stronger—in fact, the game remained scoreless until the second half. In the end, however, the Scotties battled to a 1-0 victory to wrap up their regular season schedule. The varsity volleyball match against Christchurch on Tuesday, October 26, also contained lots of tough play across the nets. SMS had a slow start and lost the first two games. After Coach Gayle Hicks made some adjustments in the defensive formation and instructed players to step up the offense, the Scotties came back to win the next two games, leading to a tie-breaking fifth game. It was a close match, but the Scotties edged out the Seahorses by two points in the final game, 15-13, to post the win. In its last game before the League of Independent Schools tournament, St. Margaret’s varsity volleyball team plays St. Anne’s-Belfield in Charlottesville on Friday, October 29. The SMS junior varsity volleyball team also will travel to Charlottesville for a match, and hopes to end its season with a win after a disappointing loss to Christchurch in two games on October 26. Tournament play begins next week, with field hockey facing off against St. Catherine’s in Richmond on Tuesday, November 2. Varsity volleyball plays its first round game at Charlottesville’s Covenant School on Wednesday, November 3. |
