Blanton Scholars Forum. Junior Sydney Harris, daughter of Ira and Denise Harris of Tappahannock, and senior Palmer Ware, daughter of Tyler and Laura Ware of Dunnsville, recently attended the two-day event, which is designed to bring together high school history and government students with nationally renowned history scholars. They were accompanied by History Department Head Louise Velletri, who encouraged them to compete for the honor. This year’s forum leader was Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Rick Atkinson, author of “An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943.” While participating in the forum, students had the opportunity to hear Atkinson’s members-only lecture. They then spent the following morning with him discussing the strategic reasons for the invasion of North Africa, how this decision revealed tensions between Americans and the British, and how leaders and leadership evolved during the African campaign. In addition, students toured the historical society’s galleries, met President Dr. Charles Bryan and had dinner at the Jefferson Hotel with Blanton alumni. The historical society’s Teachers Advisory Board selected forum participants on the basis of a research paper competition. Previous forums have featured scholars Michael Beschloss, Scott Berg, David Gergen, David McCullough and Edmund Morris. |
