Neillee Katona, daughter of Scot and Elizabeth Katona of Dunnsville, has been named a National Merit Semifinalist. She placed in the top 1% of the more than 1.3 million students who took the PSAT last year. Katona now advances in the competition to become a finalist for one of 8,200 merit scholarship awards offered by colleges and corporations.

Palmer Ware, daughter of Tyler and Laura Ware of Dunnsville, placed in the top 3% of test takers and has been named a Commended Student. She received a Letter of Commendation in recognition of her great academic promise.

Both students are in their fourth year at St. Margaret’s, and both are daughters of SMS graduates. Katona is a member of the varsity hockey, soccer and crew teams, an editor of the literary magazine and a peer leader. Ware, also a three-season athlete, heads the school’s Honor Council.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition that encourages high school students to pursue rigorous college studies, promotes a wider and deeper respect for learning and for extremely talented individuals, and stimulates increased support for the education of scholastically able students. Since it was established in 1955, the program has awarded $685 million in merit scholarships for college undergraduate education. This year’s awards have a total value of about $33.9 million.
