The Scotties lost the first game 42-33 at Trinity in Richmond, but rebounded in the second meeting with a 44-22 victory at home.
SMS players, coaches, and fans were ecstatic about the Scotty turnaround. Coach Sue Ball attributed the comeback to excellent defense by junior Kara Casey of Vienna and senior Sarah McAllister of Houston. Their strong play held Trinity's lead scorer to only 6 points in the second match-up; she scored 20 in the first game. Ball also mentioned improved offensive play as a factor in the win. Casey posted a double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds) and junior Allison Ryan of Tappahannock contributed a season-high 12 points against the Titans. The JV team also split wins with Trinity: a 27-23 victory on January 6 and a 31-15 loss on the 12th. Freshman Amiyna Sharma of Philadelphia was the top scorer with nine points. Junior Melissa Farara of the British Virgin Islands and sophomore Catherine Beck of Birmingham, AL, led in rebounds during the second game. Both teams faced Richmond's Steward away on Friday, January 14, with varsity emerging victorious, 49-29. Look for more details next week. |
