Tappahannock, VA (January 24, 2005) – St. Margaret’s School junior Kara Casey, a top scorer and starting forward, smiles when she talks about the improvement she has seen in the SMS varsity basketball team. The Scotties "started off slow, but now we are really working together," she said.

That teamwork on the court has translated into two big wins in the past week. St. Margaret’s beat the Steward School, 49-24, on January 14 in Richmond. Casey and Allison Ryan of Tappahannock contributed 15 and 14 points, respectively. After the game, Co-Captain and starting junior guard Thera Conrad of Seattle said she noticed the team "was getting more confident on the court and improving because of the wins."

That confidence carried over to the January 18 away game against the Fredericksburg Academy Falcons. The Scotties maintained the lead throughout the game and finished with a 14-point lead, 54-40. Casey was again an important contributor with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Conrad helped secure the win with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ryan and senior Co-Captain Becky Clark of Lively also worked hard under the boards, Ball added.

The Friday, January 21 home game against the Wakefield School was cancelled. SMS is scheduled to meet Richmond Christian on Tuesday, January 25 in Ball Memorial Gymnasium, weather permitting.
