Tappahannock (January 28, 2005) - A “blue jeans day” at St. Margaret’s School recently raised nearly $700 for tsunami recovery efforts in Southeast Asia.

“The tsunami struck when we were on vacation,” said junior Sydney Harris of Tappahannock, “and when we got back to school, a lot of us wanted to do something to help. Since we wear uniforms most of the time, we knew students would pay to wear their jeans, and also to help a good cause.”

Both students and faculty participated, donating at least $3 for the privilege of casual dress—and many at the 150-student school paid more.

All of the money will go directly to tsunami victims through the American Red Cross International Relief Fund, said senior Vera Attaway of Raleigh, NC. To promote the fund-raiser, she created a PowerPoint presentation about the disaster, set it to music and presented it during the school’s announcement period.

The fund drive was coordinated by SPEECH, Student Pacifists Encouraging Education to Counteract Hatred. Harris heads the group and faculty member Mollie Conklin of Warsaw is its sponsor.
