Tappahannock (February 16, 2005) - Seven girls have earned special recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret’s School. They were among the student-athletes who received awards at the school’s mid-February winter sports brunch

In varsity basketball, junior Kara Casey of Vienna was voted most valuable player. Casey also was the team’s high scorer with a total of 193 points. Players voted senior Sarah McAllister of Houston, TX, most improved player. Coach Sue Ball selected junior co-captain Thera Conrad of Seattle, WA, for the coach’s award on the basis of her teamwork, noting that Conrad most likely posted the greatest number of assists. Co-captain Becky Clark of Lively received a senior award for four years of varsity-level play.

Ball awarded varsity basketball letters, inserts or bars to senior Augusta Banner; sophomore Ligon Brooks of Tappahannock; Casey; Conrad; McAllister; junior Ali McKeon of Urbanna; sophomore Taylor Miller; junior Alexandra Newman of Lancaster; sophomore Wendy Powell; senior Stef Rosen; junior Allison Ryan of Tappahannock; and managers Caroline Arnold and Susannah Orem.

The junior varsity basketball team selected freshman Amiyna Sharma of Philadelphia, PA, as most valuable player and sophomore Catherine Beck of Birmingham, AL, most improved player. Head Coach Leslie McBride and assistant coach Pete McBride chose sophomore Aubrey Sozer of Fairfax for the coach’s award on the basis of her extra effort outside of required practices.

The McBrides awarded junior varsity letters, inserts or bars to: Beck; junior Melissa Farara; junior Taylor McEwen; freshman Blair Passagaluppi of Tappahannock; Sharma; sophomore Caitlyn Smith; Sozer; freshman Becky Ulett-Hylton; freshmen Rachel and Rebecca Urbanski; and managers Hope Scott of West Point and Leandra Osei.

St. Margaret’s will field six spring teams in four sports: crew, coached by Maren LaLiberty; varsity softball, coached by Sue Ball: JV softball, coached by Dale Harter; varsity soccer, coached by Lawrence Altaffer; JV soccer, coached by Kay Brooks; and tennis, coached by Faith Martin.

The first games of the season take place on Tuesday, April 5, when varsity soccer meets Steward at the Essex Intermediate School field and varsity softball faces Trinity at the Essex Little League Park.
