Tappahannock (April 8, 2005) - St. Margaret’s School turned up the heat on its opponents in varsity softball, soccer and tennis season openers on April 5. Varsity softball defeated Richmond’s Trinity Episcopal School, 17-1, after just five innings at Essex Little League Park. Sophomore Chelsea Jacobs of Dunnsville cleared the bases with a grand slam in the most exciting play of the game. Backed by the excellent batting of junior Alison Ryan of Tappahannock--4 for 4, with 3 doubles and a triple--the team’s offensive play was impressive.

Senior pitcher Becky Clark of Lancaster and freshman catcher Blair Passagaluppi of Tappahannock were a highly effective unit, said Coach Sue Ball.

“We didn’t make any errors during the game, and I couldn’t have asked for a better season opener,” she said. SMS is now 1-0 in the League of Independent Schools and overall. The softball Scotties’ next home game is Friday, April 15, against St. Catherine’s.

Varsity soccer avenged last year’s LIS championship loss to Richmond’s Steward School with a solid 5-0 win on the Spartans’ home field. Senior left fielder Anne Parrish of Gordonsville said the “the team wanted every ball” and went after the win tirelessly. Eighth-grader Crystal Thomas of Severn, MD, scored two goals. Juniors Julie Sader of St. Stephen’s Church and Thera Conrad of Seattle and senior Catherine Chilton of Lancaster each added one to the final score. The team looks great, according to Coach Cupper Dickinson, and its strong showing against Steward promises an exciting 2005 season. The soccer Scotties play their next home game on Friday, April 15, against Covenant.

Varsity tennis lost 8-1 to Fredericksburg Academy. The Scotties’ top-ranked singles player, eighth-grader Maria Llaneza of Mexico, won her match, 8-3.

Despite the overall score, Coach Faith Martin said she was encouraged by the effort her young team made on the school’s Sheehan Tennis Courts. The tennis Scotties’ next home contest is a Friday, April 22 rematch with Fredericksburg Academy.
