Tappahannock (April 20, 2005) - Despite windy conditions that made hitting and rowing even more challenging, St. Margaret's tennis and crew teams recently turned in strong performances during tough competition.

Tennis came back from a 1-8 loss to Steward earlier in the week to finish 7-2 against Rappahannock High School on Friday, April 15. Heavy winds forced the girls to adjust their serves and ball placement, but "once they got it, everything fell into place," said Coach Faith Martin.

First-, second-, and third-ranked singles players Maria Llaneza of Mexico, Augusta Banner of Mason, TX, and Melissa Farara of the British Virgin Isles won their matches. A competitive pairing between the top-seeded doubles teams ended in the Scotties' favor after teammates Farara and Llaneza came back from a second set loss, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.

Crew traveled to Virginia Beach to compete against nine Norfolk-area high school teams in the Broad Bay Regatta in Portsmouth on Saturday, April 9. The novice team, made up of rowers Alexandra Newman of Lancaster, Kara Casey of Vienna, Gabi Price of Lexington, KY, Hannah Kessler of Arlington, and coxswain Anna Shackelford of Hayes placed second in their first race ever.

The more experienced varsity team, consisting of Bekah Rutledge of Alexandria, Abbey Potter of Bealeton, Sydney Harris of Tappahannock, Su Jin Jeon of Korea and Shackelford, placed fourth in their flight. Coach Maren LaLiberty was impressed by the team's performance in the very difficult conditions. The Mathews regatta scheduled for Saturday, April 16 was cancelled due to small craft warnings. Scotty rowers next travel to the Azalea Regatta at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens on Saturday, April 23.

St. Margaret's varsity soccer team won one, lost two and tied one in recent competition. A scrimmage at home against non-league challenger Richmond Christian on Monday, April 18 ended in an unofficial 7-0 victory for the Scotties. The next day, another home game against Richmond's Steward School ended in a 1-1 tie, with Julie Sader of St. Stephen's Church contributing the SMS goal. The win and the tie signaled an upturn for the Scotties, who lost 5-0 to St. Gertrude's in Richmond on April 13 and were bested 2-0 by Charlottesville's Covenant School under extremely windy home field conditions on April 15.
