Tappahannock (April 21, 2005) - Senior pitcher Becky Clark of Lancaster played exceptionally well in St. Margaret’s softball victory against St. Gertrude’s on Thursday, April 21, said Coach Sue Ball. Consistent catching also helped the Scotties hold St. Gertrude’s to one run, she added. Even with two missing players and no substitutes, the nine athletes on the field worked hard to defeat St. Gertrude’s, 22-1.

The Scotties scored nine runs in the first inning, and sophomore Chelsea Jacobs of Dunnsville drove in three runs on a hit in the third inning. St. Margaret’s lost 10-2 earlier in the week in a scrimmage against Collegiate, despite a “fight to the end” that saw the Scotties score in the bottom of the fourth to stay in the game for the final three innings. Varsity soccer tied, 1-1, in its second meeting with Richmond’s Steward School on April 21. Although the Scotties defeated Steward earlier in the season, the tie was more rewarding because Steward’s regular goalie--who plays for the Olympic Development Program--was back in the net.

Junior Julie Sader of St. Stephen’s Church “fought her way in to get the angle and got off a perfect shot that made it past the goalie,” according to Coach Cupper Dickinson. It was the first time the Scotties scored on Steward’s highly skilled keeper, and as junior Co-Captain Ashley Leake of Atlanta stated, “it felt better than winning earlier in the season.”

Varsity tennis lost 7-2 against the Covenant School of Charlottesville on Wednesday, April 20, although the top two singles players, eighth-grader Maria Llaneza of Mexico and senior Augusta Banner of Mason, TX, won their matches. Coach Faith Martin praised Covenant’s strong serving and the Scotties’ good sportsmanship.
