Tappahannock (May 4, 2005) - St. Margaret’s athletic teams are adding points to the “win” column with late season victories. The novice four finished first in its class in the Eastern Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association championships on April 30, while SMS varsity soccer and tennis teams also posted recent wins.

St. Margaret’s newest rowers came home with gold medals around their necks as a result of their 7:12.6 finish in the women’s novice four finals at the EVSRA championships at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. The Scotties crossed the line more than 30 seconds—or two boat lengths—ahead of their nearest competitor.

The winning rowers were coxswain Evelyn Drennen of Birmingham, AL; Alexandra Newman of Lancaster; Gabi Price of Lexington, KY; Hannah Kessler of Arlington and Kara Casey of Vienna.

The Scotty novices also placed in Norfolk’s Azalea Regatta on April 23, finishing third out of six teams under the guidance of coxswain Anna Shackelford of Hayes.

Varsity soccer defeated Richmond Christian, 5-2, in Richmond on Tuesday, April 26. Senior Catherine Chilton of Lancaster and juniors Thera Conrad of Seattle, WA, and Rebecca Dickinson of Loretto each contributed one goal, while senior Anne Parrish of Gordonsville kicked in two.

To make her first goal of the season, Dickinson launched a ball from midfield that soared over the goalie’s head and into the net. The team played hard defensively and Scotty keeper Palmer Ware of Dunnsville took a beating from an aggressive Warrior team.

“Palmer really had to fight for every single save,” Coach Dickinson said.

St. Margaret’s varsity tennis team defeated Rappahannock High School, 5-4, on Wednesday, April 27, at home on the Sheehan Tennis Courts. All of Scotties’ top three singles players—Maria Llaneza of Mexico, Augusta Banner of Mason, TX, and Melissa Farara of the British Virgin Islands—won their matches, 8-0. Llaneza, a nationally ranked player in her home country, is still undefeated this season and Coach Faith Martin praised her “awesome top spin” in the Rappahannock match. The first and second doubles teams also won their matches.

SMS softball faced tough opponents in recent games. The varsity Scotties fell 4-3 to St. Anne’s-Belfield on Friday, April 22, and suffered an 8-1 loss at the hands of Collegiate on Tuesday, April 26. Junior Chelsea Jacobs of Dunnsville crossed the plate in the first inning after hitting the only run against Collegiate’s Cougars.
