FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tappahannock (May 12, 2005) - St. Margaret’s School varsity softball and soccer teams played tournament games of which they can be proud, including a soccer nail-biter against powerhouse St. Catherine’s that brought back memories of last year’s championship final in the League of Independent Schools.

Coach Cupper Dickinson described the soccer team’s quarterfinal match-up against top-ranked St. Catherine’s as an “incredible game.” SMS took initial control, thanks to a goal scored by senior Anne Parrish of Gordonsville and the Scotties’ relentless offense. In the first half, St. Margaret’s made 7 shots on goal, while the Saints made only 3.

St. Catherine’s goal in the second half led to a tiebreaker that included double overtime and two rounds of sudden death shootouts. The team traded goals back and forth, until St. Catherine’s was finally able to make one past goalie Palmer Ware of Dunnsville to end the May 10 game with a final score of Saints 2, Scotties 1. The finale was strongly reminiscent of St. Margaret’s 2004 league championship game against Richmond’s Steward School, which also ended in a shootout.

Despite the loss, the SMS tournament showing was a remarkable comeback from the team’s 6-3 defeat by the Saints on May 3. The team defeated the Trinity Lady Titans, 4-2, on May 6 in the last game of the regular season.

St. Margaret’s varsity softball team also was stopped by St. Catherine’s in its final tournament game. Senior Becky Clark of Lancaster put the Scotties on the scoreboard, crossing the plate in the fourth inning on an RBI by senior Nozomi Yamaguchi of Japan. The Saints responded with two runs of their own to take the May 10 semifinal, 3-1.

In their first tournament game, the Scotties walked away with an 11-4 victory against Trinity on May 9. The team reported 11 hits and 2 errors, with sophomore lead hitter Chelsea Jacobs of Dunnsville going 3 for 5 at the plate. Double threat Clark was 3 for 3 hitting. Pitching, she only allowed 2 hits and struck out 7 batters.

Earlier, the softball Scotties closed out their regular season with a Spring Family Weekend home game against Richmond Christian on May 6. St. Margaret’s battled cold and windy conditions, rallying in the sixth and seventh innings to come within a run of the Warriors. The final score was Richmond Christian 3, SMS 2.

The varsity tennis Scotties defeated Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot, 7-2, on May 3. The top three SMS singles players, Maria Llaneza of Mexico, Augusta Banner of Mason, TX, and Melissa Farara of the British Virgin Isles finished 8-0, 8-2 and 8-1, respectively. Fifth-seed junior DaHae Lee of Korea also contributed a 9-8 win after clinching a tiebreaker. St. Margaret’s rowing team will compete in the Private School Championship Regatta in Norfolk on May 14.
