In addition to the meets at Steward, the team had strong performances at three invitationals. On September 23, SMS runners competed against 25 public and private schools in their division at the William and Mary High School Invitational. Battling schools from across Virginia and nearby states, the team placed 16th. Again the team was led by Taylor Miller (24.09) and Caroline Casey (24.12) who placed 66th and 67th in a field of 137 runners. Solid support was provided by seniors Aubrey Sozer (25.27), Keri Straughan (26.55), and sophomore Nancy Brauns (29.15). On September 30, St. Margaret’s competed in the Bronze division of the McDonald’s Maymont Cross Country Festival, which hosted teams from eleven states. St. Margaret’s competed as two teams and placed 21st out of 32 schools, with an average time of 25:33. Casey led the team with a time of 24:30, followed closely by Miller with a time of 24:46. These two girls finished 61st and 72nd, respectively, in a field of 248 runners. Strong performances were also provided by Schneidman (25:11), freshman Meghan Sisk (26:24), and Straughan (26:52). The “B” team was led by newcomer and junior Michka Sharpe (28:23). Despite placing 7th out of 8 schools in a meet against an elite field of public and private schools at Collegiate on September 21, Casey, Miller, and Schneidman again led the team by placing in the top half of a field of 100 runners. “The girls have done a great job so far,” said coach Frank Rixey. “We’re looking forward to the second half of the season, as we see them continue to improve.” |
