Students at St. Margaret’s understand the importance of giving back to the community in which they live and go to school and frequently seize the opportunity to do so. On Saturday, September 30, 25 SMS students volunteered at the Multiple Sclerosis Walk sponsored by Tappahannock Memorial United Methodist Church and at the annual Aylett Country Day School fair in Millers Tavern.

“Being an active member of the local community is an important part of life at St. Margaret’s,” said Head of School, Margaret Broad. “Our students know that they can and should make a difference by giving of their time, talent, and resources.”

Since the start of school, students have done just that on numerous occasions. To start the year, the student-led “Basic Needs” organization collected school supplies which were donated to the Family Development Center in Warsaw. In addition, on Saturday, September 9, the entire student body participated in “Community Service Day,” a collective effort to clean up several hundred pounds of debris left by Tropical Storm Ernesto from Caledon State Park, Westmoreland State Park, the Wilna Wildlife Refuge, and the St. Margaret’s riverbank.

The school’s formal community service program requires that each student complete at least 12 hours of community service each year. However, many students far exceed that requirement.
