St. Margaret’s School has turned up the heat on its opponents in varsity softball, soccer, and tennis so far this season.
Varsity softball: Softball Scotties defeated Richmond’s St. Catherine’s School 5-3 in their season opener on March 29. Senior Ligon Brooks of Millers Tavern and sophomore Laura Kelley of Baton Rouge, LA spurred on the team with their excellent batting, said coach Sue Haney. The team also got a boost from pitcher Keri Straughan of Hague who struck out 8 players.
The Scotties came on strong against Colonial Beach, winning 10-3 on Tuesday, April 3, backed by the strong showing by seniors Katie Coffey of Japan who hit 4 for 4. This was a sweet victory on the heels of their first fall to Colonial Beach 0-10 on March 30 and to Trinity School 5-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning on April 2.
After losing to St. Anne’s - Belfield School 1-5 at home on April 10, the Scotties hope to bring their LIS record to 3-2 in their rematch with Trinity on Friday, April 13.
Varsity soccer: SMS varsity soccer remains undefeated with three big wins so far. They kicked off the season with a 3-1 win over Steward in their season opener on March 30. Senior Taylor Miller of Warrentown and junior Kristen Clayton-White of Washington, DC sailed two into the net to shut out Northumberland 2-0 on Tuesday, April 3. The duo was joined by freshman Betsy Joslyn of Tappahannock to give the Scotties a 3-1 victory over Fredericksburg Academy on April 4.
The Scotties will try to continue this winning streak in their meeting with Christchurch on Saturday, April 14.
Varsity tennis: Varsity tennis won 7-2 against Christchurch School in their season opener on March 30. Four of the team’s singles players, sophomores Florence Snyder of Rock Hill, SC and Melanie Waitzer of Norfolk and seniors Saori Kaneko of Japan and Da Hae Lee of Korea won their matches. The three doubles teams Waitzer and Lee, Snyder and freshman Meghan Sisk of Richmond, and juniors Willis Blair of Richmond and Michka Sharpe of Jamaica also triumphed in their matches.
According to coach Faith Martin, “The team made smart decisions on the court and played with a strategy.”
The team lost 3-6 to the Covenant School of Charlottesville on Wednesday, April 4. Despite the final score, Waitzer and Sharpe won their singles matches and the Snyder/Sisk duo won again in doubles making them undefeated. The tennis Scotties’ next home competition is a Friday, April 20 rematch with Christchurch.
