Students Honored At SMS Awards Banquet

SMS Chapter of the National Honor Society
The St. Margaret's School Chapter of the National Honor Society received
ten new members at the Academic Awards Banquet last week.


St. Margaret’s School students have won academic scholarships and special prizes that make them eligible for college scholarship consideration if they apply to and are accepted by the sponsoring institutions. The awards were presented at the school’s year-end Academic Awards Banquet.

Corbin Brooks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Brooks of Millers Tavern won the Randolph College Book Award, presented to a student who possesses both leadership and academic potential. She also received academic recognition for her work in Foreign Policy and was tapped for membership in the National Honor Society.

Boarding students recognized with special prizes were junior Katherine Burnett of Burlington, NC who won the William and Mary Leadership Award for the junior who best exemplifies inspirational leadership, outstanding scholarship, and unwavering loyalty to her school. Burnett received awards for outstanding achievement in British Literature and Composition, Latin III, and Music History and was also named to the Quill and Scroll honorary society for high school journalists in recognition of her work as copy editor of The Current, St. Margaret’s yearbook.

The Rensselaer Medal for achievement in mathematics and science was presented to Martha Reynolds of Wake Forest, NC. She also won awards for outstanding achievement in American Literature and Composition, AP Calculus, and Latin I and received academic recognition for her work in New Testament.

The Wofford College Award, presented to students in the top 10 percent of their class who have scored at least 1100 on the SAT and possess commendable character, scholarship, leadership and service to others was awarded to Hannah Kessler of Bethesda, MD and Ji-Ye Kim of Korea. That evening Kessler also received recognition for outstanding achievement in AP Biology and Ceramics and academic recognition for her work in French IV. Kim was tapped for membership in the National Honor Society and received recognition for outstanding achievement in Pre-Calculus and Spanish I.

One of the evening’s highlights was the induction of new members into the St. Margaret’s School Chapter of the National Honor Society. In addition to Brooks and Kim, new members included local students Meghan Cooke of Tappahannock and Anna Beth Lawler of Sandy Point. Boarding students Stephanie Hanson, Min Jin Kim, Young Eun Lee, Tetyana McCain, and Caroline Rollins were also tapped.

The ceremonies also recognized graduating students who have earned Presidential Educational Awards. Ligon Brooks of Millers Tavern and Chelsea Jacobs of Dunnsville were gold seal winners, having both achieved a grade point average of 90 or above and scored at or above the 85th percentile on a standardized academic test. Boarders Su Jin Jeon and Da Hae Lee, both of Korea also won in this category.

Silver seal winners achieved a grade point average of 90 or above or scored at or above the 85th percentile on a standardized academic test. They included local student Michelle Burch of Burgess and boarding students Erika Gibson, Tetyana McCain, Hannah McKee, and Rhianna Toner.

Finally, in addition to these winners, each academic department presented awards for outstanding achievement or academic recognition to as many as two students in each of the school’s courses.

Local winners included: Christina Beckham of Montross, academic recognition in Great Books and Latin II; Ligon Brooks of Millers Tavern, academic recognition in AP English and most outstanding in AP U.S. History; Michelle Burch of Burgess, academic recognition in AP English and most outstanding in Latin V; Meghan Cooke of Tappahannock, academic recognition in American Literature and Composition, World History II, Geometry, Chemistry, and New Testament; Rachel Franklin of Champlain, academic recognition in Reading and Writing for College; Scarlett Gregory of King William, academic recognition in Ceramics; Hannah Hunt of Colonial Beach, academic recognition in Great Books and Painting; Chelsea Jacobs of Dunnsville, academic recognition in U.S. History; Elizabeth Joslyn of Tappahannock, academic recognition in Latin III and Technical Theater; Martha Joslyn of Tappahannock, academic recognition in Drawing.

Also: Anna Beth Lawler of Sandy Point, academic recognition in World Literature and Composition and World History II; Ryan Martin of Tappahannock, academic recognition in Current Events; Rebecca McKinley, most outstanding in Spanish II; Hannah Newman of Lancaster, academic recognition in French I and Painting; Abby Odell of Tappahannock, academic recognition in French II, Conceptual Physics, and most outstanding in Drawing; Blair Passagaluppi of Tappahannock, academic recognition in Fashion Design and Multimedia Design; Chandler Scott of Center Cross, academic recognition in Science 8; Keri Straughan of Hague, academic recognition in Mixed Media; and Holly Wever-Christian, academic recognition in World Religions and Old Testament.
