Tappahannock (April 9, 2008)
The St. Margaret’s tennis team made an impressive showing to shut out West Point High School 9-0 yesterday. The win brings the team’s season record to 2-1.
According to coach Rodney Watkins, the day’s most notable match was played by junior Melanie Waitzer. Trailing 7-8, love-40, and facing triple match point, Waitzer demonstrated the heart of a champion and fought back to clench the victory. After one and a half hours of play and being down 0-2 in the tie-breaker, Waitzer won the game 7-3. “This was the most impressive game I’ve ever been associated with in my tennis career,” said Watkins.
Other singles match winners included senior Willis Blair, juniors Flo Snyder and Joy Williams, sophomore Meghan Sisk, and eighth grader Suzy Farmar of Tappahannock. Doubles winners were the teams of Blair/Waitzer, junior Qian Kong with Sisk, and junior Nancy Brauns with senior Mary Catherine Sargeant.
The victory was especially sweet in light of a disappointing loss to Covenant School on Friday, April 4. Despite winning 4 of 6 singles matches, the team fell to Covenant 4-5.
Come cheer for the Scotties as they face Steward School at home this Friday at 4:30.
