Assistant Attorney General Lawrence “Chip” Muir is no stranger to the dangers of the Internet. As a state attorney who prosecutes computer crimes, he is all too familiar with the consequences of misusing a computer. Muir visited the St. Margaret’s campus on Sept. 17 to discuss Internet safety with students.

His presentation, Safety Net, addressed real stories and consequences of cyber bullying, serious mistakes made on social networking sites and blogs, and protecting yourself and friends from online predators. The presentation was filled with plenty of real-life examples that prompted many relevant questions from students.

Muir demonstrated how an online predator could quickly find out where students live based on information posted on social networking sites. He also discussed how college admissions offices and human resources personnel use the Internet to screen candidates.

“St. Margaret’s is proactive in our efforts to educate students about responsible Internet use,” Head of School Margaret Broad said. “It’s important for them to see real examples of what can happen so they won’t make the same mistakes.”

On Oct. 11, St. Margaret’s will welcome Katherine Koestner, a national expert on student safety and wellness issues. Koestner will talk to parents, students and faculty about the risks and responsibilities for students and parents with respect to technology in its many forms.
