Five local girls were among several students who earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments during St. Margaret’s Annual Fall Sports Breakfast on Nov. 5.

Junior Betsy Joslyn of Tappahannock was awarded most outstanding defender for the varsity field hockey team. Seniors Corbin Brooks of Tappahannock and Anna Beth Lawler of Sandy Point were recognized with senior awards. Brooks has played on the field hockey team for four years and Lawler for three.

Senior Ryan Martin of Tappahannock received the most valuable player award for her skills on the volleyball court. Martin, Meghan Cooke, also of Tappahannock, and Scarlett Gregory of King William were recognized with senior awards for their participation on the varsity volleyball team.

The varsity field hockey team selected junior Frankie Berscak of Kitty Hawk, N.C., as most valuable player. She also won a place on the League of Independent Schools’ division II field hockey team. Pepper Silliman of Montchanin, Del., received the coach’s award. Sarah Keating of Frederick, Md., and Caroline Rollins of Atlanta, Ga., received senior awards.

The cross country team named freshman Natalia Bustamante of Mexico as the most improved runner while senior Caroline Casey of Richmond was awarded
most valuable runner and senior recognition for her four years of participation. The coach’s award went to Sujin An of Korea for her enthusiasm and persistence.

The tennis team voted senior Anne-Harden Watjen most improved player and senior Flo Snyder of Rockhill, S.C., received the most valuable player award. Senior Nancy Brauns received the coach’s award. Brauns and Snyder along with senior Joy Williams of Colmar Manor, Md., and Melanie Waitzer of Norfolk received senior awards.

Freshman Ana Elena Marina of Mexico received the most improved player award for junior varsity volleyball and sophomore Makiko Hashida of Japan received the award for most valuable player. Senior Grace Rickenbaker of Atlanta, Ga., received the most improved player award for varsity volleyball.

The banquet marked the end of the fall athletic season. The swimming, indoor track and basketball teams will soon begin winter sports practice. Varsity swimming, coached by Kay Brooks Carlton, will splash into action Dec. 12 in an away meet against Fredericksburg Academy. Varsity basketball, coached by Laura Dusablon, will play at Fredericksburg Academy on Dec. 3.
