New Tennis Courts Dedicated at St. Margaret’s School
On Friday, October 9, 1998, St. Margaret’s School dedicated the Sheehan Tennis Courts, a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Dennis W. Sheehan of Tappahannock, VA, and their daughter, Catherine E. Sheehan of Washington, D.C.
The Sheehan’s gift is a part of “The Campaign for St. Margaret’s School—Educating Young Women for Life in a New Century,” a capital, annual support, and endowment campaign to raise $3 million. This early gift allowed the school to build new tennis courts to replace those that will be displaced by the Community/Technology Center.
The Dedication, which was held on the new tennis courts located adjacent to Gilchrist Field on Virginia Street, was attended by the entire student body and faculty as well as the Board of Governors.
The Sheehan family have been friends of St. Margaret's for many years and each has served generously in several capacities. Ms. Catherine E. Sheehan was graduated from St. Margaret's in 1981 and is currently serving on the Board of Governors. Her father Dennis W. Sheehan has served on both the Board of Governors and the Foundation Board of which he served as chair. Mrs. Sheehan has been an active supporter and has frequently opened her home to members of the St. Margaret's community.
In recognizing the Sheehan’s gift, Headmistress Margaret R. Broad stated, “At St. Margaret's School we teach leadership skills, but we also recognize that the strongest, clearest leadership is leadership by example. The Sheehan family is known for their leadership internationally, nationally, and locally in their professions, their churches, and their volunteer activities.”
St. Margaret's School is an Episcopal boarding and day school for girls in grades 8-12.
