St. Margaret's Varsity Soccer Squad Shuts Out Trinity, 3 - 0

The St. Margaret's varsity soccer team, often a slow starting team, took command of last Thursday's game (January 7th) versus Trinity :05 minutes into the contest, following a series of six consecutive Trinity throw-ins. "That was the only serious offensive threat we faced the whole game," noted team tri-captain Leslie Newman. "We were laughing at how poor we were playing; we didn't know what was wrong." The Scotties quickly woke up and dominated the remainder of the match, providing a battery of shot-on-goals aimed at the Trinity goalkeeper. Most SMS goal shots in the first half hit the goalie straight on; consequently none managed to go for SMS and the score remained even at 0 - 0.

Left to right: Britt Faulkner, Kelly Proctor (partly hidden), Chase Craven, Sara Shelton and Lacey Wright.

Things changed in the second half. Sophomore forward Sara Shelton, playing in her first game of the season, scored minutes into the second half, giving the Scotties a 1 - 0 lead. Shelton's quick foot work and crisp passing opened up other SMS players for uncontested shots-on-goal. "We were loving the crosses Sara was putting up in the middle. She was really laying them up there for us," commented Kim Houck, playing opposite field Shelton. "But it was hard to be aggressive and go after them because the referees were really watching the off-sides calls." Junior right wing mid-fielder Chase Craven scored next for SMS, for a 2 - 0 lead. Craven's goal, a long-range bullet kick from far out on the right sideline, demonstrated the leg strength of the Scotties front line. In the final minutes, sophomore center halfback Carol Combs penetrated the Trinity defense and scored a solo goal which sealed the victory for the Scotties at 3 - 0. All three SMS goals were unassisted.

SMS improved its record to 2 - 1 on the season; their next game is Wednesday, December 13th versus St. Catherine's in Richmond.
