Eleven Win National Award at St. Margaret's
In recognition of National Student-Athlete Day, on Wednesday, April, 7th, St. Margaret's athletic director Sue Saunders presented eleven students a National Student-Athlete Day award certificate during morning announcements, for excellence in academics, athletics, and community service.
Saunders selected nominees who met the following criteria: an 83 ("B") or higher overall grade average; a varsity or junior varsity athlete; and excellence in extracurricular activities, community service, and the general life of the school.
The national award was presented by The National Consortium for Academics and Sports, Northeastern University's Sport in Society, The National Collegiate Athletic Association, and the National Federation of State High School Associations.
1999 award recipients honored by Saunders were: Tappahannock residents, Shannon Davis (volleyball; basketball; softball), Olivia Longest (basketball), Melissa Mancusso (volleyball; basketball; softball), Sarah Muller (field hockey; soccer; lacrosse), Cathy Ryan (volleyball; basketball; tennis), and Cameron Sgroi (volleyball; basketball). Katie Farmer (field hockey; basketball; tennis), of Millers Tavern, Emily Fisher (soccer), of Lottsburg, and Louisa resident Elizabeth Sadler (field hockey; soccer; softball) also received certificates.
Sophomores Carol Combs (field hockey; soccer; lacrosse), of Statesboro, GA, and Britt Faulkner (field hockey; soccer; softball), of Irvington, also 1999 recipients, were notified via email. Combs and Faulkner are studying at St. Margaret's-Berwick, in Australia (Victoria), as part of a third trimester exchange program.
Award recipients are eligible to be recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students, a publication honoring high-achieving students nationwide. "We strongly support the Who's Who philosophy of honoring students who have shown excellence in academics and extracurricular activities," says NSAD coordinator Susan Katz. In addition, students are eligible to compete for $200,000 in college scholarships (for parents reading, if your daughters haven't told you, the application deadline is May 7).
"It was a great honor to present these girls with their National Student-Athlete Award and to have them recognized by Who's Who and the NCAA's," says Saunders. "St. Margaret's aims to teach excellence in the classroom, in sports, in life-and these girls are each individual success stories."
