Class of 2003 Plans Car Wash Goal is to raise funds for Kosovar children

St. Margaret's Class of 2003 (a.k.a the eighth graders) just announced plans for a car wash fundraiser on Friday, April 30, from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.,at Gilchrist field off Virginia Street near St. Margaret's campus in Tappahannock. All proceeds will go to UNICEF to benefit the children of Kosovo.

SMS Class of 2003 president Eva Martinez (l.) and class secretary Giuli Juarez (r.) plan to hone their car washing skills on "the cheese" (background) prior to their class car wash fundraiser on Friday, April 30, with proceeds to benefit the children of Kosovo.

Class president Eva Martinez, 14, of Miami, FL, helped organize the fundraiser. The eighth graders, none of whom have a learner's permit, guarantee a spiff job and hope their ages (13 - 14) do not deter anyone. "Washing cars isn't something you get a learner's permit for at 15…we promise we can wash with the best of them!," says Martinez. In addition, Martinez plans to recruit a handful of faculty and community volunteers to help with the event.

"We first learned about the situation in Kosovo reading newspaper articles for Mrs. Rhinesmith's civics class," recall Martinez and class secretary Giuliana Juarez, of Mexico City, Mexico. "The situation over there is very sad. We read about relief agencies like UNICEF donating food, clothing, and medicine. We realized that a car wash could help raise money for Kosovar children too so we got together and organized things. Besides, it's a great class event and should be a lot of fun."

If Friday's wash is a success, Martinez and Juarez hope to hold a second car wash the subsequent weekend. Volunteers are welcome; donations can be sent by mail anytime before Friday April 30. A minimum $5 donation is requested by the class.
