St. Margaret's 1999-2000 Peer Leaders Selected
St. Margaret's Dean of Students Karen McCann McClelland recently announced thirty one students chosen for peer leader positions for the 1999 - 2000 school year. Those positions include peer leaders, boarding and day student prefects, student government association (SGA), and honor council.
1999-2000 junior peer leaders are (hometown in parentheses): Alexes Anderson (Silver Spring, MD), Garnett Ashworth (Tappahannock), Laura Austin (Warsaw), Chase Craven (Bethesda, MD), Mary Emery (Warsaw), Katie Hawks (Los Altos, CA), Yin Chien Hou (Taipei, Taiwan), Amy Laskar (Centreville), Sara Pirtle (Champlain), Catherine Redfearn (Kinsale), Kym Register (Carrboro, NC), and Carver Weakley (Montross).
This group comprised of student leaders in different aspects of the school includes many at-large positions but also the Student Body President (Sara Pirtle), Vice President (Kym Register), Honor Council Head (Carver Weakley), Head Boarding Prefect (Alexes Anderson), Head Day Student Prefect (Laura Austin), and Senior Class President (Mary Emery).
Peer leaders will take "Women and Leadership" in the fall, which according to McCann is "a life-skills class mutually reinforcing students' curricular and extra-curricular experiences." Students will learn about themselves, explore issues directly concerning women and adolescent girls, and focus on leadership training. Peer leaders will be empowered to serve as role models and guides, create a peer mentor program with eighth and ninth graders, and supervise school meetings and community programs. Duties will also include weekend duty responsibilities.
Dwann Cutler (West Point) and Truc Pham (Washington, DC) were Honor Council electees. Cutler and Pham will assist Honor Council Head Carver Weakley in helping to uphold and enforce the school's honor system. Honor Council members hear and discuss disciplinary cases involving violations of the Honor Code. The Honor Council then communicates to the Headmistress its view of whether a violation of the Honor Code has occurred and, if so, its recommendation concerning the penalties for the violation.
1999-2000 Boarding Prefects are: Anderton House - Alexes Anderson, fall Head Prefect, Chase Craven, spring Head Prefect, and Jeong Min Kim (Seoul, Korea). Latané Hall dormitory - 1st floor, Amy Laskar, fall Head Prefect, Olivia Dix (Dallas, TX), and Truc Pham. 2nd floor, Yin Chien Hou, Ellen Totten (Rock Hall, MD), and Margot Whisnant (Hickory, NC). 3rd floor, Lisa Bruning (Durango, CO), and Lacey Wright (Newport News), spring Head Prefect. Boarding prefects serve as a liaison between the Dean of Students and the students, help enforce dormitory rules and safety, and ensure a healthy and supportive community atmosphere in which to live.
1999-2000 Day Student Prefects are: Laura Austin, Head, Katie Farmer (Millers Tavern), Emily Fisher (Lottsburg), Ginny Moncure (Tappahannock), Catherine Redfearn, Cameron Sgroi (Tappahannock), and Rachelle Slotnick (Tappahannock).
The role of day student prefects is to act as liaisons between students, Day Student Coordinator Mary Emery, and the Dean of Students. Day Prefects will help coordinate "Hugs from Home" (a home-baked goodies weekly snack fundraiser), Adopt-A-Boarder programs, day student chores, and enforcement of general day student expectations.
Sophomore Sara Newman, of White Stone, was elected Junior Class President for next year. The Freshman and sophomore classes will elect their class officers in the fall.
"Our leader retreat this past weekend confirmed what a great group of young ladies we have to help lead next year," said McCann.
