FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
5K Rappahannock River Run/Walk & Crafts Festival
The St. Margaret's Alumnae Association will hold a 5-kilometer run/walk in conjunction with the school's Fall Parents' Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 9. Starting and finishing by the SMS Hall front steps, the scenic 3.1 mile course winds through residential streets passing historic homes alongside the Rappahannock River. In addition, there will be a Water Lane Dash for kids and adults who wish to opt for a shorter distance.
Tappahannock Chief of Police James H. Barrett, Jr. has agreed to provide local "bicycle police" to help monitor the course to ensure runner/walker and volunteer safety. A water station will be available at the 1.5 mile turnaround.
Special race t-shirts will be given to all pre-registered participants and awards will be presented to the top three male and female runners in each age category. Overall top male and female, SMS alumna, parent, and student, and Essex County finishers will receive additional awards. Participants are encouraged to Pre-register by Sept. 22 in order to guarantee a race t-shirt as race-day supplies will be limited. Pre-registration: $12 (postmarked no later than Sept. 22); race-day registration: $15. Look for race applications around Tappahannock late this Summer.
"We anticipate a super fast course and hope that many local citizens will participate and help make this 1st annual 5K Rappahannock River Run a glowing success that we can continue for a number of years," says SMS Alumnae Association President Martha Frances Fortson.
In addition to the 5K, a crafts show will take place on the school grounds Friday, Oct. 8, from 2-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fine handmade items will be offered for sale during the two-day show featuring Virginia artists.
