FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Winifred Delano Retires as School Librarian
With a B.A. from Longwood College, Winifred Delano began her career as the Librarian and Creative Writing teacher at St. Margaret’s in 1959, taking a 23 year hiatus from 1962-1985 to raise her son and two daughters. She enjoys spending time outside observing the changes in the seasons, weather, crops, and the river. She can often be found researching county records and reading. As an integral part of the St. Margaret’s community, her daily contributions and delightful presence will be dearly missed.
The following dedication appeared in St. Margaret's literary magazine, The Tides, and was read at St. Margaret's Academic Awards Ceremony in May by editors Laura Austin and Catherine Redfearn, both members of the Class of 2000:
We say "Good-bye" to Mrs. Delano this year, as she retires after two careers at St. Margaret's School. The first was before her marriage; the second after her children were in school. Since 1985 she has taught English and Creative Writing, orchestrated the move of the library from St. Margaret's Hall to it's present location in the Viola Woolfolk Center (a space that she helped plan), directed all of the library selections and purchases, and supported the teachers and students who sought her counsel. For fourteen years the Tides magazine has been her passion. What first began as a small pamphlet organized by her Creative Writing class, the Tides evolved into an annual tradition maintaining a busy staff. Because of her encouragement, enthusiasm, and many late nights, the editors and contributors have published a new edition of Tides each year. We have learned to look, smell, taste, and touch in new ways, and to transfer these sensations to paper. She has inspired our writing in the many disciplines - English, History, Science, Math, Foreign Language, Art, Music - and encouraged students of all interests to find an outlet through which to share their thoughts. We will remember her lively Chapel announcements that spurred us to read, write, share, and remember. So, good-bye, Mrs. Delano. We wish you the same success that you have had during your years at St. Margaret's School and delight ourselves in knowing that you will continue to encourage and inspire young hearts wherever your travels may bring you.
