Hannah Mallory Perkins
Outstanding Service Award

Betsy Ware Ware '47

Courtenay Tayloe Altaffer '66

Two graduates who have spent most of their adult lives volunteering for St. Margaret's are the first recipients of the Alumnae Association's Hannah Mallory Perkins Outstanding Service Award. The association created the award this year as a means to formally recognize faithful alumnae for their unsung service to the school.

Courtenay Tayloe Altaffer '66 is the association's vice-president and a class agent. She is the mother of two former students, Anne '92 and Elizabeth '96, and the aunt of Mary Emery '00. Her other SMS roles include co-chairing the Thistle House committee, as well as serving a previous term as vice-president.

Betsy Ware Ware '47 is the grandparent chair of the 2002-2003 Annual Fund and a strong proponent of St. Margaret's in the Essex-Tappahannock community. She also is the mother of two alumnae, Elizabeth Ware Katona '76 and Lucile Ware McCarthy '82, as well as the grandmother of current student Neillee Katona '05.

Ms. Altaffer and Mrs. Ware received silver thistle pins at the association's annual meeting and luncheon. The association named the award to honor long-time SMS English teacher and distinguished alumna Hannah Mallory Perkins '40. Mrs. Perkins joined Association President Trudi Barton Allcott '77 in making this year's presentation.
